Who is an Ordinary Member?

By virtue of Section 14 of the Singapore Academy of Law (“SAL”) Act, the following persons shall become an Ordinary Member of the Academy:

Every person who is:

  1. admitted as an advocate and solicitor, whether or not he has in force a practising certificate issued under Section 25 of the Legal Profession Act; or
     
  2. a Legal Service Officer; or
     
  3. a foreign lawyer registered by the Attorney-General under section 130I of the Legal Profession Act; or
     
  4. a foreign lawyer granted the approval of the Attorney-General under section 130L of the Legal Profession Act.

You can register for your ordinary membership online. Your membership will commence with immediate effect upon your admission to the Bar, appointment as a Legal Service Officer, registration as Foreign Lawyer under section 130I of the Legal Profession Act, or granting of approval by the Attorney-General under section 130L of the Legal Profession Act.

 
 
Ordinary Membership Rights and Privileges
 

As an Ordinary member of the Academy, you may participate in the regular talks, seminars and workshops organised by the Academy, at a discounted rate; with the aim of promoting continuing legal and professional education. In addition, you may attend the various functions organised by the Membership and Social Committee to foster closer ties within the legal fraternity. You may also apply for the Citi Singapore Academy of Law Platinum Visa Card which comes with a lifetime annual fee waiver for both principal and supplementary cards, upon approval. There are also selected retail outlets and service providers whereby you may enjoy exclusive privileges when you present your SAL membership card.

You will also have access to resources such as the SAL Journal, the SAL Annual Report, the ‘Inter Se’ to keep you informed of the happenings at the Academy and other publications from time to time.

 
 
Ordinary Membership Annual Subscription
 
By virtue of the SAL Rule 3, the annual subscription (inclusive of prevailing GST) for an Ordinary Member is as follows :-

Request for Certificate of Non-Indebtedness (CNI)
 
If you are applying for PC, the Academy will file the CNI electronically to the Supreme Court to certify that you have satisfied section 25(1)(c) of the Legal Profession Act (Cap. 161) if there are no outstanding moneys, contributions and subscriptions owing by you to the Academy.

You can log in to our Member’s Portal to request for CNI efiling. To log-in as SAL member on our website, key in your user name and password.

If you have forgotten your password, you can reset your password and a password will be sent to your email address registered with us after keying in your SAL Membership No. & ID (NRIC, Passport, FIN) on our website.

Termination of Ordinary Membership
 
There is no provision in the SAL Act for resignation of ordinary members. However, Ordinary Membership will be terminated if:
  1. If a member ceases to be a member by virtue of Section 16 of the SAL Act.
     
  2. If the Senate by resolution terminates the membership of a member pursuant to Section 18 of the SAL Act.
