The strategic plans of the Academy are: expand the Singapore legal industry; grow and showcase Singapore’s jurisprudence and thought leadership; provide and/or facilitate knowledge management; contribute to developing laws and a legal system for a globalised city; and build core expertise for legal practice outside Singapore. The Steering Committee on Strategic Direction implements the approved strategic plans of the Academy. The Strategic Direction Directorate of the Academy provides oversight over the structures and programmes of the Academy to ensure alignment with these plans.

In 2007, the Strategic Direction Directorate initiated and led the development of Singapore Law Watch , a daily legal news syndication site which has attracted a continuously increasing viewership since its launch in January 2008. This serves as a “central librarian” and is useful to the smaller law firms that do not have the resources to build dedicated knowledge management facilities.

To advance the strategic plan to expand the Singapore legal industry, the Strategic Direction Directorate produced a brochure entitled Singapore: Your Partner for Legal Solutions in Asia. This was launched in August 2008 at the Academy’s 20th Anniversary Appreciation Dinner. The Strategic Direction Directorate also led an initiative, subsequently driven by the International Promotion of Singapore Law Directorate, to create a system for selecting and disseminating key Singapore judgments for publication in reputable law reports and journals overseas. It also steered the inception of a summer school programme which seeks to introduce Singapore law and its commercial relevance to foreign lawyers. A “soft-launch” version of the Summer School was created and put forth in 2008 by the Legal Education and Studies Committee in the form of an Executive Programme on Business Valuation for Legal Professionals, dealing with the topic of “Business Valuation, Financial Instruments and Securities Regulation”. This was a sell-out programme, attracting commercial lawyers from both Singapore and the region who sought a deeper understanding of the interaction of financial and legal disciplines in business lawyering.
