Singapore
law, which has its roots in
English law, has now evolved
into a distinctive
jurisprudence. It continues
to absorb and modify the
common law as well as best
practices from other mature
legal systems. Developments
in Singapore law reflect an
acute awareness of current
societal trends, as well as
commercial practices of
domestic and international
businesses. Today, Singapore
law has come to be the most
frequently chosen among
Asian national laws as the
applicable law governing
contracts, as published in a
2005 report by the
International Court of
Arbitration, and the
Singapore legal system has
received numerous
international accolades for
its integrity and
efficiency.
The Academy recognises that
legal knowledge is the
intellectual capital of its
members. Accordingly, one of
the Academy’s key foci is
the development and
enhancement of legal
knowledge. The Legal
Knowledge Cluster of the
Academy undertakes the
following functions:
(i)
Publishing works on
developments in local laws
and disseminating these
works regionally and
internationally
(ii) Providing a suite of
programmes for
continuing
legal education and studies
on legal issues that are
both of contemporary and
long-term importance to the
legal industry
(iii)
Reporting on judgments
emanating from the High
Court and the Court of
Appeal
(iv) Initiating
law reform
proposals to make
recommendations to further
the efficacy of the laws of
Singapore
(v) Preserving and promoting
awareness of our
legal
heritage. |
