A Brief History of the Law Reform
Committee
The LRC was formed in 1989, then known as
the Law Revision Committee. Since inception
it has been active in promoting the reform
and development of the law.
Before 1993, the work of the LRC was
supplemented by permanent subcommittees
which studied specific issues in a few areas
of work, namely: Reception to English Law,
Civil Law and Procedure, Criminal Procedure
and Evidence, Corporate Law and Insolvency,
Transnational Legal Co-operation and
Technology and Law.
Since the 1990’s, the LRC has become an
independent law reform agency, directing
research and review projects in various
areas of law. It has produced numerous
papers, some of which have led to the
amendment and update of existing
legislation, and enactment of new laws. The
LRC was also consulted on several occasions
by various government bodies in their review
of policy-driven legislation.
The LRC works closely with the Law Reform
and Revision Division (LRRD) of the
Attorney-General’s Chambers which deals
mainly with “policy” law. The LRC focuses on
handling the more technical areas of law, or
what is commonly called “lawyer’s law”.
