Senior Counsel in Singapore are appointed pursuant to statute and by a selection committee constituted under section 30 of the Legal Profession Act comprising the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General and the Judges of Appeal.

The selection committee appoints Senior Counsel on the basis of applications received from persons who have had a minimum of 10 years’ experience as advocates and solicitors or as Legal Service officers or both. The committee may appoint a member of the Bar as a Senior Counsel if they are of the opinion that, by virtue of the person’s ability, standing at the Bar or special knowledge or experience in law, the person is deserving of such distinction.
