The period 2006-2010 has witnessed significant developments in a number of areas of Singapore law. Many fundamental legal principles have been critically re-examined by the courts, and consequently affirmed or modified.
The law of Singapore has gradually been growing more distinctive while maintaining its basic infrastructure and contours as a common law jurisdiction. The former is necessary in order to serve the needs of the local community, while the latter is necessary in order to ensure that the needs of the country (in particular, its economy) as well as to promote its role as a global commercial and social hub are met. Indeed, both aims are often coincident and it is clear that change should not be effected for its own sake. 2006-2010 has proved itself to be a productive period for searching evaluation of the shape and direction of Singapore law.
In this Conference, specialists in key selected areas of the law will share their perspectives on the themes and trends manifested during this period. Topics have been selected where there have been developments which involve significant changes to the law, or have significant doctrinal or practical impact, or where problematic issues are otherwise lurking. These selected areas will be covered with the breadth and depth that only subject experts bringing their skills to bear on the respective topics can provide. Speakers will also draw on major developments in other jurisdictions where appropriate for comparison. This Conference will provide invaluable resources to advocates working in litigation and arbitration involving Singapore law or Singapore as a dispute resolution or enforcement venue, to lawyers involved in transactional work, to academics, and to anyone else interested in Singapore or the common law.
