Singapore Academy of Law Annual Lecture 2017

Singapore Academy of Law Annual Lecture 2017

Supreme Court Auditorium, Basement 2, 1 Supreme Court Lane, Singapore (178879)
16 November 2017

You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it" so said one of the iconic figures in literary history who has always embodied the twin paragons of lawyers and legal practice: the public interest and honour.  These two concepts are arguably the basic components of legal practice as it has traditionally been regarded.  But how relevant are they in the modern era in which we find that the practice of  law is treated as a business requiring above all tangible results and where often multiple conflicts of interest exist?  Does the modern lawyer even pause to think of the two concepts or to try to understand their significance?  The focus of this year's Lecture is on lawyers and the practice of law but this is of critical relevance to the community at large because the lawyers of today become the judges of tomorrow.  It is therefore very much in the public interest to ensure that the legal profession really does represent an appropriate springboard to the judiciary where critical constitutional functions are discharged and justice for all served.
