The Criminal Justice Chapter (CJC) of the SAL's Professional Affairs Committee (PAC) is rolling out a series of workshops and seminars specifically designed to raise the standards of advocacy within the Criminal Bar. The first in this series of workshops is entitled “How to Take Instructions”, which is an essential starting point for all criminal lawyers.
Taking instructions well is an important and essential skill which is often overlooked by lawyers in their careers. Mastering this allows lawyers to cultivate good and lasting relationships with their clients and maintain high standards of client care.
It is important to understand the goals of the client interview, the professional attitudes and appropriate interview techniques. Lawyers also need to be aware of their professional ethical responsibilities, to recognise issues which often arise and follow appropriate steps before, during and after the interview.
This workshop will help lawyers acquire practical skills and proper etiquette in key areas such as how to take instructions from clients from the very first meeting. There will be 4 parts to the workshop — (1) Theory followed by (2) Demonstration (3) Role-playing and (4) Fireside Chat.
As spaces are limited, members are encouraged to register early.
