Singapore Academy of Law Issues Public Invitation To Its Annual Lecture 2001, "From Servant To Employee: A Study Of The Common Law In Action" By The Right Honourable Lord Bingham of Cornhill, Senior Law Lord


Through the Singapore Academy of Law Lecture series, inaugurated in 1994, the Academy hopes to promote continuing legal education and maintain high standards of legal scholarship as well as promote social interaction among the legal fraternity in Singapore. Reduce space over the years, distinguished legal luminaries from around the world have been invited to share their expertise and views on important issues which affect both the legal world and the ever-evolving society.


The Academy is honoured to have the Right Honourable Lord Bingham of Cornhill, Senior Law Lord, speak at its 8th Annual Lecture. Lord Bingham will speak on the topic, "From Servant to Employee: A Study of the Common Law in Action". He will discuss the development of the trust and confidence term in employment contracts.


Lord Bingham brings with him a glittering career both at the Bar and on the Bench. At Balliol College, Oxford, he took a first in modern history in 1956, then topped the Bar Finals in 1959. Thereafter he joined Lord Scarman’s chambers, specialising in commercial work. He was made a Queen’s Counsel at the age of 38 in 1972. Lord Bingham embarked on his illustrious judicial career three years later as a Crown Court recorder in 1975. He was appointed a High Court judge in 1980 and was subsequently elevated to the Court of Appeal in 1986. After serving as Master of the Rolls, Lord Bingham was appointed the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales in 1996. Currently, he is the Senior Law Lord.


The 8th Annual Lecture will be held on Monday, 10 September 2001 at 8:00 pm at the Raffles Ballroom, Raffles City Convention Centre. The lecture is open, without charge, to both the legal profession and to the public by invitation only.
