A THANK YOU TO OUR AUTHORS AND CONTRIBUTORS

Moments from Imprints 2023, where Academy Publishing's 15th anniversary was also celebrated

Moments

“Publishing is the lifeblood of the law,” noted Judicial Commissioner Goh Yihan, addressing the guests gathered at Imprints 2023, Academy Publishing (AP)’s annual “thank you” event to its authors and contributors.

Imprints had been a mainstay of the AP calendar until the pandemic and this year’s edition was a chance to mark a significant AP milestone: its 15th anniversary.

JC Goh, who is co-chair of SAL’s Legal Research and Publications Committee, said, “Perhaps the greatest testament to Academy Publishing’s success is that we probably cannot remember a time when there was no Academy Publishing. Speaking for myself, I still remember the days when second- and third-hand law textbooks changed hands between batches of students for upwards of $250.”

“While these textbooks were undoubtedly good, a majority of them were written by foreign authors with no analysis of Singapore law. This in turn affected the development of local case law because lawyers at the time would likely have cited primarily foreign cases from these foreign textbooks in their submissions to the courts.”

AP changed this by writing about and promoting Singapore law. Its efforts continued in earnest through the pandemic, shared Justice Kannan Ramesh, also a co-chair of SAL’s Legal Research and Publications Committee. “While Covid might have cloistered us in our home offices for most part of the past three years, Academy Publishing’s work did not abate. In total, 16 volumes of law reports, 17 new books, 27 journals, 83 SAL Practitioner articles and the monthly Civil Litigation Update were published in this period.”

Two more new titles, Singapore Rules of Court: A Practice Guide and COVID-19 and International Business and Economic Law, were launched yesterday, alongside Singapore Law Reports, SLR (StC), a new LawNet resource that will make it easier for lawyers to access and understand key decisions of the State Courts, Family Courts and Youth Courts.

Justice Ramesh added, “JC Goh and I have been given the unenviable task of filling big shoes with our appointment as Chairs of Legal Research and Publications Committee with effect from 1 April 2022. We accept the responsibility with humility and a touch of trepidation, taking heart from the fact that Justice Andrew Phang and Justice Justice Prakash have left Academy Publishing in a position of strength.”

The AP team, too, paid tribute to Justice Phang’s enduring guidance and leadership of AP, by presenting him with a unique memento: a handcrafted book box for the ardent reader to store his latest read.
