Singapore Mediation Centre (SMC) is Singapore’s leading provider of alternative dispute resolution services. These include its core services of mediation, adjudication, neutral evaluation, and resolving disputes involving families, infrastructure projects and Internet domain names.

SMC has mediated more than 5,200 matters worth over $10 billion since its launch on 16 August 1997. About 70% of our cases are settled with 90% of them resolved within one day, attesting to the effectiveness of mediation.

SMC is one of four designated mediation service providers under Singapore’s Mediation Act 2017. This means that mediation settlements administered by SMC can be converted into a court order that is immediately enforceable.

SMC also pioneered mediation training in Singapore and is an acknowledged regional leader in this field, specialising in mediation training for judges, lawyers and other mediation stakeholders. Beyond Singapore, SMC’s experienced training faculty has conducted training in ASEAN countries, other parts of Asia, the Middle East, the South Pacific region and Europe.

SMC also provides consultancy services in areas such as conflict resolution systems design and helping to construct mediation infrastructure. At SMC, we help businesses fully appreciate the value of mediation as a strategic risk-management tool that they can count on in commercial dealings.

The Chief Executive is responsible for strategising and developing a sustainable business model for SMC, translating the company vision and goals into action steps, and managing overall company resources effectively. The role reports to SMC’s Board of Directors and the Chief Executive, Singapore Academy of Law Group.


Candidate Qualities

  • A dynamic, visionary and innovative leader with proven leadership and strategic planning skills in Small Medium Enterprises and/or Business Units in Multi-National Corporations
  • Have a proven track record of delivering value and results to their organisation.
  • Have the passion and capability to build new technology enabled products/services as well as innovate and grow existing products/services. Must be able to initiate and develop new technology enabled products/services, ensuring Product-Market fit for long term growth.
  • Strong ability to influence and collaborate with key stakeholders. Must be able to establish and build a good network of valuable contacts. Able to inspire confidence and create trust among staff.
  • Strong business acumen and problem-solving skills. Thorough understanding and knowledge of management and financial practices in business operations.
  • A degree with at least 10 years of management experience. Candidate(s) with prior leadership experience in professional services or SMEs preferred.


Key Accountabilities

  • To develop a business model and plan for SMC to be the leading regional centre in Asia for:
    • mediation, adjudication and other ADR (alternative dispute resolution) services; and
    • training in negotiation and conflict resolution with the aim of becoming a global provider of dispute resolution training and accreditation services.
  • Drive the development of digital tools to enhance the dispute resolution process in terms of efficiency, effectiveness and new capabilities, and to spearhead the adoption of such tools in the industry both locally as well as internationally;
  • To ensure financial accountability to SAL group while delivering existing product/services development project timelines
  • Have oversight of SMC operations supported by his/her deputy and ensure that SMC practices good corporate governance and continues to be financially sustainable.

Descriptions of the Job Role

  1. Strategic Planning
  • Set the mission for SMC and define the overall strategy within the mission approved by the SMC Board.
  • Provide overall and strategic leadership, develop long-term planning and lead to realise the SMC’s growth agenda.
  • Develop, drive and expand recurring revenue streams within the framework of the SAL Group and SMC's vision and overall objectives.
  • Drive development of resource and cost management optimisation plans based on the market practice and business environment.
  • Identify opportunities and manage competition/threats in the marketplace, with constant evaluation of the financial structure, business strategy and strategic objectives.
  • Front development, communication and implementation of effective growth strategies and processes.


  1. Business Development/Marketing/Outreach and External Communications
  • Oversee brand development and the implementation of effective marketing strategies for SMC.
  • Drive SMC’s business development, marketing and other commercialisation activities
  • Represent SMC in dealings with clients, business partners and other external stakeholders.
  • Participate in industry-related events or associations that will enhance SMC's reputation, brand, and potential for success.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with and win support of public and private sector stakeholders to drive SMC’s growth.


  1. General Management and Operations
  • Oversee financial performance and risk profile while ensuring that regulatory obligations are met.
  • Monitor SMC’s performance by measuring and analysing results, initiating corrective actions, and minimizing the impact of variances.
  • Drive improvements to SMC's operations through feedback and identification of issues.
  • Drive the SMC's governance, compliance issues and reporting, including but not limited to sound fiscal management.
  • Foster a value-based culture and a culture of accountability in the company.
  • Drive development of business continuity and succession management for mission critical roles that have financial impact to SMC.
  • Lead high-performing teams, attract and retain talent, provide mentorship and guidance to staff.
