Increased C$ for SAL members from 2024

At his Opening of Legal Year address, The Honourable the Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon, who is also SAL President, announced that active and eligible members of SAL would receive an increased credit dollar (C$) sum of C$250 (up from C$35 at present).

From 2024, C$ can be used for selected:

  • Workshops, seminars and conferences;
  • (NEW) Structured training programmes, such as the new Junior Lawyers Professional Certification Programme and specialist accreditation
  • (NEW) Legal research services, such as digital books from Academy Publishing
  • (NEW) Personal LawNet subscriptions (only eligible for in-house counsel). This will be made available in due course, so look out for updates from SAL.

Why is SAL increasing the C$ for members? 

SAL is committed to ploughing back membership fees directly to members and giving them access to high quality products and services to support their lifelong learning needs. Lifelong learning remains vital to the continued success of our members. We hope that these steps taken by SAL to invest in the training of our members will spur law firms to likewise increase investment in the professional development of their teams. 

Who is eligible for the increased C$?  

An estimated 12,555 SAL corporate counsel, legal service officers and practitioners are expected to benefit from this initiative.  

When will I be credited with the increased C$? 

You will be credited with the increased C$ within 24 hours upon payment of your 2024 membership fees. Do check your members’ portal to view your remaining C$ balance. 

Which products can be used with the increased C$? 
On the LawNet Store, look out for products marked with the imagetag. These can be paid for with your C$. From 2024, C$ can be used for selected: 

  • workshops, seminars and conferences; 
  • structured training programmes, such as the new Junior Lawyers Professional Certification Programme and specialist accreditation (NEW) 
  • legal research services, such as digital books from Academy Publishing  (NEW) 
  • Personal LawNet subscriptions (only eligible for in-house counsel) (NEW)  

How do I redeem the C$ for LawNet subscriptions?  

Details on in-house counsels C$ redemption for personal subscription to Lawnet will be shared later in 2024 

When will the increased C$ be valid till? 

The increased C$ will be valid until 31 December 2024.  

I have unused C$ from 2023; will this be rolled over to 2024?  

No, C$ are only valid in the calendar year which they are issued. 

Members who have already paid for their 2024 invoice and received $C35 in the members portal in 2023, will receive a C$215 top up into their accounts in 2024.  

Can I transfer my C$ to other SAL members or charity? 

The C$ scheme is for individual SAL members to take charge of their training and development. It is therefore not transferrable to other members or charity. 

Can I use my C$ to offset my membership fees? 

No, C$ can only be used for training and upskilling activities.  

I have unpaid membership fee invoices from previous years. Will I still get the C$250 if I only pay off my 2024 invoice? 

No. All outstanding arrears to SAL must be paid to receive the C$250 in 2024.
